O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm in her performance. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the third place. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
